Ax falls at Independence Schools

INDEPENDENCE (KWWL) -- The Independence School Board voted to cut ten staff positions Monday night to solve a budget shortfall.

That's fewer cuts than originally proposed and comes after student protests and an hours-long public hearing on the budget cuts.

Superintendent Devin Embray says the cuts will be made through two layoffs and eight early retirements. He adds the board designed the cuts to minimize the impact on students.

This is the 12th straight year Independence Schools has been forced to make budget cuts.
