School merger bill on hold; now working to limit administration

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- Iowa lawmakers have put on hold the idea to merge up to two-thirds of the state's school districts.

The plan would have merged districts with fewer than 750 students.  Supporters say it could save millions of dollars in expenses and improve education.

Lawmakers will consider the move for the rest of the year.

Senator Matt McCoy of Des Moines, the senator who proposed that merger bill, is now working to limit the number of superintendents in our state.  His proposal would reduce the number of superintendents to one per county by 2013.

McCoy says his plan would save up to $22 million each year.

Opponents of the bill say it would hurt student test scores and graduation rates.
