Sumner man wants new trial in murder case

WAVERLY (KWWL) -- A northern Iowa man convicted of killing another man wants a new trial.

Last month a Bremer County jury convicted Lawrence Hamby, of Sumner, for the murder of Paul McKinney. McKinney was beaten and strangled in his Sumner home in January of 2006.

A judge postponed Hamby's Monday sentencing to a mandatory term of life in prison without parole. The hearing was postponed after Hamby's attorneys filed motions challenging the jury verdict and evidence at trial.

A hearing on the motions is set for March 5.
