Iowa dog bites back at bed bugs

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- Each year pest control businesses are reporting an increase of bed bug removal jobs. It was getting so busy, one Iowa exterminator stepped got some four-legged help.

Enter Abby, the bed bug detection dog. She is about two years old and the first dog with her skills in the state.

Abby has a pretty full time gig. She goes to the office very day, works in the field three to four days a week and puts in about six hours a day.

Owner Brad Janssen says bed bugs can hitch hike home with you from just about anywhere, including hotels, airplanes and even movie theaters. When the pup finds evidence of a bed bug, she stops and jumps.

"A well trained technician is only about 40% accurate, compared to a dog which is about 90% accurate," said Janssen. "The dog will clear a standard hotel room in a few minutes. it would take a technician at least 45 minutes to an hour."

Abby was trained in Florida along with about 150 others like her. The academy also trains mold detecting dogs.
