Math Fair: learning outside the classroom

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -- It was all about math for kids in Cedar Falls Saturday.  About 100 kids and their families gathered at the Maucker Union on campus of the University of Northern Iowa the third annual Math Fair.

The Math Fair is put on by the UNI math club called TEAM, or teaching educators about mathematics.  Fourth, fifth, and sixth graders won prizes by completing ten of about 20 different workstations.

"I think it's a neat thing they're putting on for their kids, and how they're using the future teachers. They did it well because the kids are just trying to make it to every station that they could," said Michael Hoy.

All of the UNI students volunteering at the math fair are on track to teach math after they graduate.  They say it's a great opportunity to make them better.  The group is also looking to expand its community involvement with more activities.
