Neighborhood on alert for suspicious man

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - Cedar Rapids police have had extra patrol in the Bowman Woods area the past two days. A letter sent home to parents brings to light three incidents. Police believe two are related. They have cleared one of the individuals, but are still looking for another. It's all left a neighborhood on alert.

Friday would normally be a day where you would find second-grader Ashley Kendrick playing in her yard.

"It's tough," said Lynne Kendrick, Ashley's mother. "When it's nice, they want to be outside."

But on Thursday, Ashley was one of many Bowman Woods elementary students to get a letter to take home: warning them of a suspicious man in the neighborhood.

"My teacher said that if we're walking we should walk in pairs," said Ashley.

"I was actually glad that parents confronted the man and talked to him and asked him, you know, that they're paying attention to what's going on in the neighborhood," said Lynne.

Bowman Woods didn't have school Friday. After seeing the letter, Lynne is just erring on the side of caution.

"The idea is just to not let her play, especially in the front yard by herself, be outside by herself," said Lynne.

The news has residents in the neighborhood on alert.

"It sparks the talk within your own family about safety," said Lynne.

But she says it's helped to remind her daughter what to do if she is confronted by a stranger.

"I would run home and tell somebody," said Ashley.
