Iowa awards $56 million for highway work

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Iowa is moving ahead with 19 highway and bridge projects just days after a federal stimulus package was signed into law.

Governor Culver announced Friday the Iowa Transportation Department has awarded the contracts worth more than $56 million. They're funded by Iowa's $358 million portion of highway stimulus funding included in the federal package signed by President Obama on Tuesday.

The most expensive projects are two bridge replacements and pavement projects on Interstate 29 in Fremont and Mills counties. They total about $31 million.

The work will begin when weather allows.
