Suspicious man seen near Cedar Rapids elementary school

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - A Cedar Rapids elementary school is cautioning parents and students after a suspicious man was spotted Wednesday.

Below is a letter sent home to parents by Bowman Woods Elementary principal John Zimmerman:

February 19, 2009

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),

This courtesy letter is to inform you of reports of a suspicious man loitering in the Chelsea Drive area on the afternoon and evening of February 18. The parent reports we have been given include:

  • an instance in which the man was wearing a yellow raincoat and walking a dog;
  • another instance a parent approached the man who said he was with the cable company;
  • another family noted the man appeared to be in his 50's, bald, caucasian, wearing a down jacket. He was said to be driving a dark (silver or blue) four door older Volvo with Colorado license plates. However, the license plate recorded cannot be located.

The Cedar Rapids Police department is involved and is patrolling the area.

Teachers and counselors are reminding students to always be aware of their surroundings, always walk in pairs, as well as reviewing what to do if a stranger approaches. Please feel free to reinforce this message at home.

As always, the safety of our students is top priority. This letter is to make you aware of this neighborhood situation. If you have seen anything suspicious, please contact the Cedar Rapids Police Department at (319) 286-5491.
