Ribbon cutting scheduled for Dubuque Step by Step project

DUBUQUE (KWWL) - Step by Step's first housing project, 759 Bluff, will host a ribbon cutting at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 24 in Dubuque.

This is the general public's first opportunity to see the results of the $1.6 million investment in accessible housing for persons with disabilities. The project was funded largely through grants and donations, including more than $600,000 received through the City of Dubuque.

An 1890's brownstone apartment building has been fully modified to provide full accessibility for mobility impaired residents. This includes a central elevator, roll-in showers and a state-of-the-art kitchen to be used communally by all residents. Individual units, with fireplaces, original wood floors and ornate woodwork have been beautifully restored and preserved. All contribute to a sense of "home," while being fully accessible and located centrally in the downtown.

"This project answers a definite need in our community for accessible housing that is in close proximity to public transportation, business district, and recreation," said Wayne Breckon, President of Step by Step. "The goal of this project is to enable disabled people to live independently."

Step by Step was incorporated in 2005 to serve as an advocacy agency. The residence at 759 Bluff is the first of what is hoped will be other similar projects to provide accessible housing, hope and opportunity for persons with disabilities.
