CR workers out of hospital after possible leak

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- Four workers who inhaled some type of gas at a Cedar Rapids corn processing plant are out of the hospital.

Fire officials say the four contractors at the Archer Daniels Midland Company plant got sick Wednesday morning. They had been working on the roof of the plant's refinery department.

The company evacuated about 75 workers as a precaution.

Fire department spokesman Greg Buelow said two of the workers suffered potentially life-threatening respiratory problems. According to ADM, all four were released from the hospital by Wednesday afternoon.

Officials say they don't know the cause of the illnesses but it could be exposure to either sulfur dioxide or hydrochloric acid. An ADM safety team is investigating.
