Push to score sports tourism dollars

In just four years of existence, the all volunteer, non-profit Cedar Valley Sports and Entertainment Commission (www.cedarvalleysports.org) has been involved in events which have had an economic impact of 7 and a half million dollars in direct spending around the Cedar Valley. Events like the NWCA National Wrestling Coaches Association National Duals in the UNI Dome and the Inaugural Peregrine Triathlon.

At the McLeod Center Wednesday night, prior to Drake's 47-46 upset win over UNI, the all-volunteer, non-profit Cedar Valley Sports and Entertainment Commission welcomed sponsors, individuals and businesses who save the same goals as the Sports Commission, and that's to bring more visitors to the Cedar Valley through new events, as well as helping existing events with grants and bid money. The Sports Commssion is building a pool of available grant and bid money to help area groups with their current sports and entertainment events, and to bid for national events in the future. See Video from the McLeod Center gathering Wednesday night.

  • The Sports Commission has worked with the following events, that have contributed over $7.5 million in direct spending to the local economy:
    • NWCA Duals (2006 & 2007, continuing through 2009)
    • Cedar Valley Strongest Man Contest
    • 2007 USHL All-Star Game
    • My Waterloo Days Kids Bike Races
  • Other events we could bid/bring to the area with additional funding:
    • Pre-season men's basketball tournament at UNI
    • Youth sports - soccer, wrestling, hockey, basketball
    • FUTURES Golf Tour event
    • NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships
    • Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships
    • Division I, II, III Championships
  • All the events we assist are events that will bring people to town and have a significant economic impact on the Cedar Valley
  • We have 32 sponsorships to sell ideally - up to 36 total, though
  • If people looking at the larger sponsorships need an additional group in the outing or some extra freebee (like a wind shirt, etc), feel free to negotiate with them.
  • The grand prize sponsor can be in-kind, but they need to ensure that we get overnight accommodations, golf, and assistance with transportation
    • Needs to be trip for four, minimum of two rounds of golf & two overnights at a hotel.  Has to be first-class accommodations.
  • We may open up a morning start for those interested in playing but not in being the annual sponsor.  Golf would be $500 ($125/player).  But please do not offer that right away.  If someone might be interested in that, keep them in mind for after we sell out the afternoon - that way we can ensure we fill up the afternoon.
    • If we do not sell all annual sponsorships, those on that list will be invited to play golf in the afternoon to fill out that group.
  • The annual sponsorship runs from April 1 - March 30 and includes the following:
    • Logo and click-through link on our website:  cedarvalleysports.org
    • Hole sign during golf outing
    • Golf foursome
    • Logo/listing/sign during any Commission-sponsored event

If your organization needs help in securing a sports or entertainment event in which visitors will stay overnight at least one night in the Cedar Valley, please contact Dawn Breckenridge for more information. www.cedarvalleysports.org.
