Iowa House OKs sales tax measure

DES MOINES (KWWL) - The Iowa House has approved a plan asking voters if the state should spend nearly half of any future sales tax increase on outdoor and natural resources programs.

Legislators have no plans to increase the sales tax, but by a 82-14 vote Tuesday they supported putting the proposed constitutional amendment to voters. It would dedicate three-eighths of a cent of any future sales tax increase to natural resources programs, generating roughly $150 million.

The measure was approved by the Legislature last year. If the Senate agrees with the measure approved by the House, the issue would go on the ballot statewide in November.

Supporters say outdoor programs often are cut first in tough budget times and that Iowans deserve a vote on the issue.
