Prevailing wage bill may be debated in Iowa this week

Posted:

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- The head of the state House Labor Committee says he has the votes to push to debate a measure that would force contractors to pay the prevailing wage on public projects.

Rep. Rick Olson says the House could debate the prevailing wage measure as soon as Thursday.

The prevailing wage is usually set by unions who bargain for a contract. Critics of the effort argue it's certain to increase the costs of public projects.

The prevailing wage measure is part of a package of labor-backed measures being pushed in the Legislature, and it has significant momentum.

Business groups say the measure will cost the state $30 million. Labor leaders say without it, bidders will inevitably drive down wages to become the low bidder on a contract.
