AP sources: UAW, GM make progress in auto talks

DETROIT (KWWL) - People briefed on the negotiations between General Motors Corporation and the United Auto Workers said they are making progress toward a concession agreement but may not reach a deal in time for Tuesday's government-imposed deadline.

The union continued to talk Monday with GM and Chrysler LLC. Both companies are living on a combined $13.4 billion in government loans. They must submit plans by Tuesday to show how they will repay the loans and become viable again.

Two people briefed on the talks with GM reported progress toward a deal. They did not want to be identified because the negotiations are private.

United Auto Workers Legislative Director Alan Reuther says the union is talking with the companies but he does not expect labor agreements by Tuesday.
