Family honors fallen soldier, accepting donations for veterans

HUDSON (KWWL) -- Eastern Iowans are honoring a Cedar Falls soldier who died nearly two years ago.

Specialist Travis Vaughn died in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan on February 18th, 2007.
Sunday, family and friends gathered at Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery for a moment of prayer.

From there, people joined at the Federal Pub in Hudson, where family members took donations in memory of Travis Vaughn to be given to Veterans.

"Every year we honor him this year we wanted to give back a little bit and to be vets that we still have living and honor those who've fallen and do a drive for the needs they have in Marshaltown," said Christine Vaughn.

Items that are being requested include non-alcoholic aftershave, combs, denture adhesive and cleaner, deodorant, emery boards, hairbrushes, hand lotion, magnifying mirrors, non-alcoholic mouthwash, nail clippers, pencils, pens, playing cards, popcorn, salt, peanut oil, postage stamps, toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, socks, soap, DVDs VCR movies, western paper backs, writing paper, envelopes and word puzzle books.

"I'd like to let everybody know that the locations that are listed in the paper in the Celebrations we'll still be collecting donations until the 18th. So if anyone wants to take anything to the locations, that would be great," said Kandie Vaughn.

Donations are still being accepted at The Federal Pub in Hudson, Mr.G's in Cedar Falls, A to Z Learning Center in Waterloo, Crossroads Assembly of God in Waterloo, United Church of Christ in Reinbeck, and Rydell Collission Center in Waterloo.

The donated items will be given to the Marshalltown Veterans Home Wednesday.
