Cyclone Softball is 7-0

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Kelsey Kidwell had four hits, including two doubles, and drove in three runs as Iowa State defeated Presbyterian, 10-3, in softball action Saturday at the Jacksonville Tournament. The Cyclones improved to 7-0 with the win, marking the best start in program history.

ISU pounded out 13 hits and took advantage of seven errors by the Blue Hose (1-2). Carrie Monroe and Heidi Kidwell tacked on two hits each for the Cyclones.

Charissa Carlin (3-0) got the win for Iowa State, tossing 4.1 innings and striking out a season-high seven batters. Rachel Zabriskie and Bianca Lopez were strong in relief, allowing no runs in 2.2 innings out of the bullpen.

Kelsey Kidwell led off the game with a double and came in to score on Amanda Bradberry's single up the middle to give the Cyclones a 1-0 lead after the first.

ISU added to its lead in the second with three runs. The Kidwell sisters led the attack with Heidi Kidwell driving in a run on a single and Kelsey Kidwell singling to plate two runs.

Presbyterian got two runs back in the third inning and one in the fifth to trim the lead to 4-3.

Alex Johnson drove in her ninth run of the season on an infield single in the sixth inning to give the Cyclones some breathing room at 5-3.

Iowa State then exploded for five runs in the top of the seventh inning. Presbyterian committed three errors in the inning, which started with Lopez reaching on a fielding error. Monroe then singled and advanced to second on the throw as Lopez moved to third on the play. After pinch hitter Dalyn Varela was hit by a pitch, Heidi Kidwell reached on a fielding error to plate Lopez for the first run.

Kelsey Kidwell then added another with her fourth hit of the game and Carleigh Berry added an RBI on a single to center. The last run of the frame came on a sacrifice fly by Emily Gilbert, giving ISU a 10-3 lead heading into Presbyterian's final at bat.

Lopez, seeing her first career action in the circle, tossed a scoreless seventh to secure the win.
