Atalissa officials to appear before lawmakers

DES MOINES (KWWL) - City officials from Atalissa have been asked to appear before the Legislature's Government Oversight Committee next week to talk about a group of mentally disabled men who were bunking in a city-owned former schoolhouse.

Some say the bunkhouse, run by Texas-based Henry's Turkey Service, was operated as an unlicensed care center. Authorities say the men were housed there so they could work at a nearby meatpacking plant.

The state fire marshal closed the building last week and evacuated 21 residents after finding unsafe conditions.

Meanwhile, Senator Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, on Friday called for a thorough investigation.

The senator's office says he is working to schedule a hearing with the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee to examine what happened and how to prevent it in the future.
