Posted:

Nominations are now being sought for the 2009 Champions of Character event scheduled for Thursday, April 30, 2009 at the Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Educators, youth leaders, parents, or any community member may nominate a student in grades 6 - 12, attending a school located within the Waterloo or Cedar Falls school geographic area.  This includes private and parochial schools.  Nominees are students that exhibit strength of character and exemplify one of the 6 Pillars of Character:  trustworthiness, caring, citizenship, responsibility, respect or fairness.  Nominations are due Friday, February 20 and are downloadable at: http://www.waterloo.k12.ia.us/communityed/.

Nominated students will be notified of their nomination and receive an entry form and will be asked to write an essay titled, "What Good Character Means to Me."  Essays will be judged on:

  • compelling content,
  • insight and understanding of character,
  • reflection of students' experiences in life or other experiences as they relate to strength of character, and
  • specific actions that demonstrate good character.

A panel of judges from the community and the Cedar Valley Character Counts! Committee will select the winners. Nominations that include students' names, school and address must be sent to Ms. Uyntha Duncan, 425 Rosemary Drive, Cedar Falls, Iowa 50613 by Friday, February 20.

The community is invited to attend the Character Counts!/Champions of Character in the Cedar Valley Event at the Five Sullivan Brothers (Waterloo) on April 30, 2009 when winners will be announced and prizes awarded.

The Cedar Valley Character Counts Committee is sponsoring the Champions of Character event and essay contest. To learn more about this Committee, contact Bruce Clark, Chair at Liberty Bank at 319.233.8527.
