Meskwaki member sentenced in casino theft in Iowa

TOLEDO (AP) -- A member of the Meskwaki tribe accused of stealing $480,000 from the tribe's casino in Tama has been sentenced to 10 years in prison and ordered to repay the money.

A Tama County judge sentenced Ryan Roberts on a theft charge on Thursday. He pleaded guilty on Dec. 19.

Defense attorney Matthew Boles told the judge that Roberts, who managed the poker department, stole from the casino because he has a gambling addition.

Roberts was accused of taking money 137 times from 2006 to 2008. Prosecutors say he stole an average of $3,500 each month.

Tribal member Leodean Peters says the theft especially affects the community now. Members were receiving $2,000 a month since the casino opened in 1992 to around 2005. Then it dropped to $900 and now it's $500.
