Fire officials warn of melting ice in recreational areas

Posted:

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- While no cases have been reported this month, safety officials are being pro-active and warning Iowans to stay clear of thin ice.

The Cedar Rapids Fire Department says recent warm weather has melted a significant layer of ice, making some area waterways dangerous.

The Department advises people to watch out for thin, clear, or honeycombed ice.

According to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Ice needs to be at least four inches deep to support the weight of one adult, and five to six inches thick to support snowmobiles, ATVs, or groups of 3-4 people.  The DNR also recommends having a personal floatation device and a rope at least 50 foot long when out on ice.
