Federal charges filed against eastern Iowa men

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Two men living in eastern Iowa appear to be included in a national crackdown into suspected immigration fraud.

Vineet Maheshwari and Fazal Mehmood, who investigators say run Clinton-based Worldwide Software Services Inc. and Sana Systems Inc., were arrested yesterday as part of an FBI investigation.

Hours later, the U.S. attorneys office announced it would hold a news conference this morning detailing "a nationwide coordinated enforcement action targeting visa fraud."

Federal documents show that Maheshwari was arrested on charges of fraud and misuse of immigration documents. Mehmood was arrested on charges of misuse of a Social Security number and falsely making an immigration record.

Both men appeared in federal court in Davenport. A detention hearing was scheduled for tomorrow.
