Linn County will move offices to Steve & Barry's

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - Linn County will move to Steve & Barry's according to Joi Bergman with the county.

County employees have been working in the Westdale Mall since the flood.

17 government offices are currently being housed in mall.

The Linn County Board of Supervisors Wednesday unanimously approved signing a lease with City Gate LP for the former Steve & Barry's location. County offices currently at Westdale Mall will move to the former Steve & Barry's location within the next few months. An official move date has not been set.

The lease is for six months with an option to renew in six-month increments for up to three years. The lease officially begins Feb. 15 which will allow the County to begin preparing the space for its operations. The cost for the first six months is $1.70 per square foot for a total of $97,150. If Linn County offices were to remain at their current Westdale Mall locations, the cost for a six month period would be $278,256.

By the end of the second year of the lease of the former Steve & Barry's space, the cost will be $2.33 per square foot. The cost for the third year, should the County continue leasing the space, will be at market value.

"The space at Steve & Barry's provides a significant cost savings to the public," said Supervisor Chairwoman Lu Barron. "It's an opportunity to have many of our departments closer together in one location, and provide a better working environment for our employees."

During Wednesday's meeting, the Board also approved a contract with Design Dynamics, a local architectural firm, to help design the open space for office use.
