Local union hold public demonstration on UI campus

IOWA CITY (KWWL)-- The country's economic crisis is having its effect on students as well.  This is why a local union held a public demonstration on the University of Iowa's campus Wednesday.

Members of UE Local 896/COGS (Campaign to Organize Graduate Students) expressed their concerns on the impending budget cuts at the University of Iowa.  They urge the University not to cut teaching assistant positions because they say it will further erode the quality of undergraduate education.

"We would ask that the University abide by its own principles that is student success comes first," said Mark Salisbury, President of COGS.  "We would like to remind them that it's going to be about all the students."

COGS represents 2600 teaching and research assistants at the University of Iowa.
