February heat wave brings spring fever

IOWA CITY (KWWL) - Sunglasses, shorts and ice cream. It's just part of another sixty degree February day in Iowa.

"Pretty much just drove around with my windows down, living life, just walking around, being outside," said U of I junior Elizabeth Borre.

Despite plenty of evidence that it's still winter, instead of slugging through the snow, U of I students spent Tuesday soaking up the sun.

"It's just amazing," said U of I senior Dean Wirtz. "I figure after all the years of all the cold in February it's time we get one day."

The calendar may say one thing.   But taste buds are saying another.

"When I got here there was a line of like twenty people outside the door," said Whitey's employee Faith Bickner. "Coldstone is open before us so apparently they were too crowded so they sent a bunch of people down here to wait for me, which was kind of intense."

It's a far cry from the last few weeks where Bickner spent most of her shift reading.

"I guess it's back to foot sores and panic attacks," joked Bickner.

Even an afternoon of running errands got better when you could do it with the top down on the convertible.

"Winter can be so long and you stay indoors so much and these days come and you get to get outdoors and the fresh air," said Joan Benson of Iowa City.

But this unexpected spring break is almost over. The cold...and maybe even snow returns on Wednesday.

"I don't think I'm gonna leave my house tomorrow," said Borre.
