Majority of lawmakers back easing smoking ban

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- A measure that would ease Iowa's indoor smoking ban has been backed by more than half of the state House.

The measure sponsored by Webster City Democratic Rep. McKinley Bailey would allow smoking at outdoor patios of bars and restaurants. The bill was co-sponsored by 50 other lawmakers, meaning it has the support of a majority of the 100-member House.

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy of Des Moines has said any effort to ease the strict smoking ban approved last year is "off the table" during the current session.

After being introduced last week, the measure was sent to a House committee, where there's been no action.
