Davenport foundry cuts 30 jobs, citing economy

DAVENPORT (AP)--Blackhawk Foundry & Machine Co. has eliminated 30 jobs because of the current economic situation.

Company officials say the layoffs have occurred over the past two weeks because of decreased demand, which has forced the company to streamline operations.

Blackhawk Foundry produces iron castings for electric motors, diesel engines, engine components, conveyor systems, valves and pumps.

Company officials say no further layoffs are planned.

Company President Jim Grafton says that despite the economic downturn, the company's customers continue to see orders.

Grafton says he is optimistic that demand will stabilize in the second quarter of this year and that his company will be adding new business in the next few months.
