Economy forces change in UI hospital expansion

IOWA CITY (AP) -- A project to expand University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics has been altered because of the economy.

Officials say the project has been split into two phases and it won't be known until June 30 whether the first phase will move forward immediately or be delayed because of the economy.

The first phase of the project is a new Children's Hospital tower, remodeling of operating rooms and construction of an ambulatory care clinic in Coralville.

The price of the first phase is less than $500 million.

Hospital officials say they hope to begin work on phase one soon. Completion is scheduled for 2014.

The second phase includes a new critical care tower, but no timeline for the work has been set.
