Council to discuss social host ordinance

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- To help combat under age drinking, the city council will be discussing a "social host" ordinance at Monday night's work session.

In general, a social host ordinance allows the host of an event to be prosecuted if someone under the age of 21 is drinking at their event.   Washington county and West Des Moines have similar social host ordinances.

At this time, the council does not have a specific proposal drawn up.   The work session begins at 6:30 Monday evening.

And at their formal meeting Tuesday, the council is expected to vote on increasing fines for those younger than 19 in bars after 10 o'clock as well as toughening up liquor license guidelines.
