Independence holds public hearing over school budget cuts

Posted:

INDEPENDENCE (KWWL) -- After more than 60 high school students skipped class to protest potential budget cuts, the school district is seeking public input.

The students say the proposed cuts put at risk certain programs, such as elementary school art.

Officials have proposed eliminating 13.5 positions, including nine teachers, two guidance counselors, 1.5 librarians and one administrator. The move would save the district $758,000 for the 2009-2010 school year.

Officials say the reductions are needed to offset declining enrollment and the poor economy.

The school board plans to vote on the proposal on Feb. 23.

The public hearing begins at 7:00 p.m. at the Independence Middle School.
