Had enough budget news? How about dove hunting?

DES MOINES (AP) -- The budget might not be the talk at the Statehouse this week.

Instead, lawmakers could debate the merits of blasting doves.

The change could come because there's little lawmakers can do about the budget until receiving updated budget forecasts later in the session. With time on their hands, legislators will turn to issues that don't involve much money -- and doves could be topic number one.

Des Moines Democratic Sen. Dick Dearden is the main sponsor of a bill that would create a hunting season for doves.

The Legislature in 2001 approved a measure allowing the Department on Natural Resources to establish a hunting season for mourning doves. Then-Gov. Tom Vilsack vetoed the measure.
