Iowa State Crushes UNI On the Mat, 26-9.

The No. 21-ranked University of Northern Iowa Panther wrestling team battled the No. 2-ranked Iowa State Cyclones to a 26-9 decision on Friday night in Hilton Coliseum. The Panthers tallied wins from 133-pounder Steven Fitzgerald and 184-pounder Alex Dolly in the dual.
 

Iowa State improved to 12-2 on the year, while UNI fell to 7-6 on the season.
 

At 125 pounds, ISU's No. 10-ranked Tyler Clark scored a 9-4 decision over Cruse Aarhus. UNI's Steven Fitzgerald was awarded a forfeit win at 133 pounds to give the Panthers a 6-3 lead in the dual.
 

The Cyclones tied the dual at 6-6 following No. 3-ranked Nick Gallick's 9-2 victory over the Panthers' Trent Washington at 141 pounds. Gallick started quickly by taking down Washington five seconds into the match and ended the first period with 2:55 of riding time en route to the triumph.
 

No. 18-ranked Mitch Mueller benefitted from a pair of takedowns in the closing seconds of the first and third period to take a 7-3 decision over UNI's Brett Robbins. Robbins tied the match 2-2 following a locking hands call on Mueller and an escape. But Mueller came back with a takedown of his own at the 1:06 mark of the second period to take the lead, 4-2. Robbins nearly knotted the match at 5-5 with 30 seconds left in the third period, but Mueller was able to fend off Robbins shot and kept a 5-3 lead. Mueller added another two-pointer with one second left for the 7-3 decision.
 

At 157 pounds, No. 7-ranked Cyler Sanderson added a major decision over UNI's Tyson Reiner to put the Cyclones on top 13-6 in the dual.
 

One of the evening's marquee matchups came at 165 pounds where UNI's No. 4-ranked Moza Fay battled No. 7-ranked Jon Reader. The match was scoreless after one period, but Fay was able to take a 1-0 lead with an escape in the second period. Reader took a 2-1 lead with a reversal at the 1:22 mark of the third, but Fay was able to knot it back at 2-2 with an escape. However, Reader fired the final shot and got a takedown with 27 seconds left to take the match, 4-2.
 

Senior Alex Dolly, who is ranked No. 15 in the nation, ended a run of five straight wins for the Cyclones with a dramatic 3-2 victory over ISU's Jerome Ward at 184 pounds. The match was scoreless after one period before Dolly netted a second-period escape for a 1-0 lead. Ward, who is ranked No. 18 in the nation, tied the match at 1-1 before Dolly was able to score the winning takedown with 41 seconds left in the third period. Ward tallied an escape to cut the margin to one, but Dolly was able to hold on for the win.
 

No. 1-ranked Jake Varner tallied a major decision over UNI's No. 14-ranked Andrew Anderson at 197 pounds, 9-1. The match was scoreless after one period, but Varner was able to take control in the second with an escape, takedown and stalling point against Anderson. Varner added to his lead in the third period and was able to score a bonus point for the Cyclones. ISU led 23-9 following the 197-pound matchup.
 

The final match of the evening provided plenty of excitement for the 2,927 fans in Hilton Coliseum as No. 2-ranked David Zabriskie finally tallied a 4-3 riding time criteria win over No. 15-ranked Christian Brantley at heavyweight. The match featured no takedowns and three escapes for each wrestler. Zabriskie was able to tally 14 seconds of riding time in the overtime period to earn the triumph.
 

UNI's next match will be Feb. 14 at 2 p.m. against Chattanooga in the McLeod Center.
