Digging to find internships in Dubuque

Posted:

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -- It's hard to find a job these days, but it's becoming even harder to find an internship to help build on your career. But they are out there.

Taylor Kellogg wasn't looking for an internship when she found this position the Dubuque Chamber of Commerce.

"I get e-mails all the time saying that there are internships available and I thought this might be a good fit," said Kellogg.

As a junior at Clarke College, she's been interning there since August.

"Ads that are in the paper, billboards so that's something that's being done," said Kellogg.

But finding an internship hasn't come easy for everyone, especially given recent layoffs.

"It's almost a smack in the face if you will, to have an intern to replace those positions but it's a small percentage," said Zoe Pole.

And while national trends point to a drop in internship programs, it appears that in Dubuque internships are available. It just takes some digging, so first thing we did was google them.

Dubuque internships pulled up dozens of search engines but nothing specific. So we took the old fashion approach and picked up the telephone.

"Yes do you have any internships available," we asked.

We called eight local business, four large corporations and four small companies. Five out of the eight had internship opportunities. But isn't there an easier way than spending a few hours on the phone searching?

Zoe Pole, director of Workforce Development at the Chamber is working on a solution.

"I'm working on creating a list of all the opportunities that are out there so, a one stop shop, where you can go to this list online and see all of the companies," said Pole.

For now, students like Kellogg have careers services at school. And as the job market stinks and graduation approaches for many students, Pole says at this point there's only one thing you can do.

"Show what you're really passionate about it, and that you're dedicated to doing the best you can," said Pole.

We also called all the colleges in the Dubuque area today, they say their career centers have been busy with students searching for jobs and internships.
