School sign-up after the floods

Cedar Rapids (KWWL) - Another step of flood recovery for Taylor Elementary in Cedar Rapids.

Students and staff had to be moved to other schools after more than three feet of water rose in the building during the floods. On Friday, the first of several enrollments to sign children up for next school year.

It's been a long road to recovery for Taylor Elementary School. Friday marked another step. Parents could enroll their kids for the fall, when the school is to re-open.

Klarrissa Rose will enter second grade this fall. She's ready to return to what she says is her favorite school. This is the first step in finding out who will join Klarissa in classes this fall.

"It really means a lot because she was struggling at the first of the year, the changing of the school, her teachers, she really misses Taylor you know," Chestina Campbell, Klarissa's mom said.

"It's reinforced what we know when we work there, is that Taylor is a big family that cares about one another. It's good to see the children, there's a lot of smiles and good reason for it," Brian Christoffersen, Taylor Principal said.

The district will hold another enrollment day next month.

They're also holding family nights in a couple of weeks, as the school community continues to stay together, in what has been a trying eight months.

All students who will be in kindergarten through fifth grade next year needed to sign up.
