Reid optimisitc about stimulus bill as Obama calls for action

Posted:

WASHINGTON (KWWL) - President Barack Obama said the latest unemployment numbers "demand action," and the Senate's Democratic leader is expressing optimism that he'll get it.

Acknowledging that the current bill is not perfect, Obama says the more than $900 billion bill is about the right size and scope. Speaking at the White House, he also said getting bogged down in "politics as usual" while 3.6 million Americans are out of work would be "irresponsible."

A bipartisan group of nearly 20 Senate moderates has been negotiating in hopes of trimming about $100 billion from the package.

Republican leader Mitch McConnell says the GOP is ready to support an economic stimulus bill. But he says, "Putting another $1 trillion on the nation's credit card isn't something we should do lightly." He adds Republicans won't support "an aimless spending spree."

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says a vote this evening is possible.
