Big thaw expected with rain on the way

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- Iowa is in for a spring break in the middle of winter, and the big thaw and thunderstorms could cause rivers to top banks and flood some low-lying areas.

Temperatures will be in the 40's on Friday and above 50 degrees on Saturday. That's 20 degrees or so above normal. The warm temperatures are expected to continue into next week and be joined by thunderstorms Monday.

There are 18 inches of snow on the ground in Lake Mills, near the Minnesota border. And in eastern Iowa, while the snow has mostly melted in some spots, in areas of shade there are still several inches of snow.

Kenny Podrazik of the National Weather Service says a combination of snow melt and heavy rain atop frozen ground could cause problems. Ice jams also could be troublesome as rivers rise.
