Fire damages Cedar Rapids home

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- Neighbors called 911 to report smoke coming from the front attic window of a home at 825 17th Street SW at 6:37 p.m. Thursday.  Upon their arrival, firefighters found a single-story residence with light smoke coming from the eaves and gable.

Firefighters made entry into the home through the front door and encountered moderate heat and smoke.  The fire crew made their way into the kitchen where they extinguished burning embers and noted that the fire had burned through the ceiling into the attic.  Firefighters checked for extension and worked to minimize further loss.

The fire had largely burned itself out prior to the fire department's arrival as most of the oxygen was consumed within the structure.  There was heavy fire, heat and smoke damage to the kitchen and attic, as well as significant smoke damage to the entire interior of the home.

The owners of the home, Gerald Mittan, age 22 and Amanda Anderson, age 21, were not home at the time of the fire.  No one was injured, however the couple's Schnauzer and West Highland White Terrier died of smoke inhalation.  The Red Cross was on scene to assist the family.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
