The cost of rebuilding Iowa

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - Questions swirl during the grand opening of the new Rebuild Iowa office in Cedar Rapids. Some lawmakers are questioning the office, which is in charge of overseeing the recovery efforts of the floods and tornadoes.

"We feel we have been very transparent especially with the dollars Rebuild Iowa is using," Communication Director for Rebuild Iowa, Tina Pottoff said.

"People need to understand this is going to be a multi-billion dollar recovery effort," Iowa Governor Chet Culver said.

Those questions include the pace of recovery as well six-figure salaries and even a $19,000 carpet for the Rebuild Iowa office in Des Moines.

"Then you turn the page on the expenditures and it shows $19,000 for a carpet. Maybe it's a magic carpet, I don't know," Representative Jeff Kauffman said.

"If there are good reasons for them I hope that can be presented in a good way instead it's the carpet that the lieutenant governor wanted.  Answers like that are unacceptable," Representative Pat Grassley said.

Officials with Rebuild Iowa say the carpet needed to changed and the salaries are competitive with similar positions within state government.

Governor Culver says he stands behind the Rebuild Iowa office and their decisions.

"We've already secured 1.5 billion in state and federal funds and it is critically important to have some agency, some entity administer that day to day recovery effort and to coordinate it," said Governor Culver.
