CR City Council approves building and facilities master plan

CEDAR RAPIDS (News Release) - Wednesday night, the Cedar Rapids City Council approved a Buildings & Facilities Master Plan of approximately $132 million in capital construction projects, with at least $33 million to be completed by the end of 2010.

The plan separates the City's flood-damaged facilities into five project categories. The entire presentation is available online at www.cedar-rapids.org. On the home page under "Flood Information", look for the link titled, "CR Buildings & Facilities Master Plan - Flood Recovery". Here is a summary of the plan:

  1. Major Buildings: Begin Design Immediately - These are large facilities necessary for efficient and effective operation of the City. Contractors will be hired as soon as possible to begin designing the repair of these facilities.
    • Main Police Station
    • GTC  City Bus Terminal
    • GTC  Montessori Building
    • Paramount Theater
    • Central Fire Station - still pending FEMA determination
    • Main Library - still pending FEMA determination
  1. Major Buildings: Design Pending External Process - These are large facilities that will be redesigned for repair or replacement after either a FEMA determination or a public participation process.
    • Animal Control Center - still pending FEMA determination
    • Veterans Memorial Building/Mays Island Parkade - part of upcoming public participation process
    • Main Public Works Building - part of upcoming public participation process
    • Solid Waste Public Works Building - part of upcoming public participation process
    • Five Seasons Transportation Facility - part of upcoming public participation process
  1. Quick Start Projects: Complete Fall 2009 - Contractors will be hired as soon as possible to begin designing the repair of these facilities.

  1. Quick Start Projects: Complete 2010 - These facilities are ready for a contractor to begin designing a repair plan.

    • Riverfront Maintenance Buildings
    • Time Check Recreations Center
  1. Additional Evaluations Required - These facilities require more study and planning before they are repaired or replaced.
    • Police Shoot Range & Storage Building - part of upcoming public participation process

    • A Street Shop - functional evaluation required
    • Riverside Roundhouse - functional evaluation required
