Proposal would put state-run resort in private hands

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- A state legislator says the state-run Honey Creek Resort State Park at Rathburn Lake should be turned over to private enterprise.

State Sen. Matt McCoy has introduced a bill that would require the Department of Administrative Services to see whether the park property, management and marketing could be leased to a private firm that McCoy says would provide better marketing ideas.

The resort is now run day-to-day by Minnesota firm Central Group, who says Honey Creek is running at about the same occupancy rate as resorts of its kind.

Under the bill, the state would still own the land and pay the firm a flat rate.

The much-maligned Honey Creek is the state's first taxpayer-backed resort. It is struggling financially and has been the subject of a variety of criticism since it opened in September.
