Council approves local sales tax vote

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- The Cedar Rapids city council has taken steps to help raise funds for those affected by the flood.

Tuesday the council unanimously approved a resolution to ask voters to support a 1% local option sales tax.  The tax calls for 90 percent of collections to go towards the rehabilitation of flood damaged homes, and the other ten percent towards property tax relief.

"This is actually a whole program for the whole city, not just the flooded area," said council member Jerry McGrane.  "The more we do, and the more money we can get in, the better the city's going to be."

A special election will be held on March 3rd.  If passed, the tax will go into effect April 1st and continue for just more than five years.
