UI Conservation Lab helps restore artifacts

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL)- The African American Historical Museum is bringing home artifacts they never thought possible thanks in large part to the Conservation Laboratory at the University of Iowa.

Today the library completed restoration of 30 flood-damaged objects belonging to the museum, some items took 20 to 30 hours to completely clean.

Museum curator Susan Kuecker is thrilled with the results.

"I remember a lot of these objects when they came out of the museum heavily covered with sludge and the staff here at the University of Iowa has just done a fantastic job," says Kuecker.

In all, the museum gave the conservation lab 356 items, most of which will be restored in the next two years.

The lab is also restoring flood-damaged collections from the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library in Cedar Rapids as well as the Johnson County Historical Society.
