Unions seek Grassley support of stimulus

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- A coalition of labor and community activists are urging Republican Sen. Charles Grassley to put aside partisanship and support President Barack Obama's giant economic stimulus plan.

Union leaders held a news conference Tuesday to seek Grassley's backing for a plan they say would boost Iowa's economy and help pull the nation out of the recession. The group is running television ads with a similar theme.

Although the unions typically favor Democratic candidates, Danny Homans of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees says one-third of his members are Republicans.

Grassley says he hasn't seen the TV commercials but has heard from constituents that Obama's stimulus plan is too wasteful. Grassley has also said in previous interviews he opposes the bill because of the pork barrel spending involved.
