New process to get your driver license

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Iowa will begin a new license renewal process as soon as this summer that state officials hope will cut down on identity theft.

Iowa Motor Vehicle Division director Shirley Andre says the new process matches programs in 22 other states.

Under the new process, drivers will receive a paper document when they renew their licenses, and get the actual license through the mail.

Andre says the driver's picture will be run through a state database to ensure he or she doesn't have any other Iowa license under another name.

The program will cost the state an extra 15 cents per license, but Andre expects long-term savings by not having to pay for maintenance or supplies for current license-issuing equipment.
