Cat blamed for starting Deep River fire

A cat is being blamed for starting a fire that caused thousands of dollars in damage to a Deep River home.

Firefighters were called to the home early Wednesday morning. No one was home at the time.

Deep River Fire Chief Brandon Wanders says a space heater was turned on in an upstairs bathroom to thaw frozen pipes.

He says it appears a cat jumped on a pile of towels, knocking them onto the space heater and starting the fire.

Wanders estimated damage at up to $10,000.
