Iowa House approves local option sales tax for disaster recovery

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- A bill aimed at funding flood recovery passed in the Iowa House and will now go to Gov. Chet Culver for approval.

The plan lets officials put the 1 percentage point local option tax increase to voters in all counties deemed presidential disaster areas after last summer's severe weather. That's 80 of Iowa's 99 counties. Elections could be held as early as March and the tax increase could begin in April, should voters approve.

The measure was pushed by legislators from Cedar Rapids, where massive flood damage remains eight months after flooding of the Cedar River.

The bill passed the Iowa Senate Wednesday night by a vote of 32-18 and passed in the House just after noon on Thursday by a vote of 55-37. Culver is expected to sign the bill.
