Iowa's 12th safe haven baby left at hospital

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- A baby boy is safe after someone left him at an Iowa hospital under the state's "safe haven" law.

State officials say the boy was born at the hospital on Tuesday.  However, his parents said they did not want the child and did not want to be contacted about his future.

This is the 12th time someone has used the state's "safe haven" law since it went into effect in 2001.

The law allows unwanted newborns 14 days old or younger to be left at any Iowa health facility with no questions asked.

Officials with the Iowa Department of Public Health says the baby was delivered full-term and is in good health. The baby will be adopted.

All the previous babies have been adopted.
