Pay freeze, bigger class size warnings of UI

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- Proposed changes at the University of Iowa could affect not only college employees, but the students as well.

Provost Wallace Loh at the University of Iowa issued email wanrings on Wednesday that faculty should prepare for a pay freeze and bigger classes as the university trims costs to absorb state budget cuts.

The school has asked college deans to develop plans by March 20 to trim costs to offset budget cuts in fiscal year 2010 and to generate more revenue.

Loh says the university also plans a new incentive program to reward colleges that generate additional revenue.

Iowa's three public universities already must trim more than $17 million this year, and Gov. Chet Culver has proposed a 6.5 percent across-the-board cut for next fiscal year.
