Asian markets higher on U.S. House vote

BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) -- Investors in Asia seem pleased by the U.S. House approval of the $819 billion stimulus bill. Hong Kong's Hang Seng rallied 4.6% Thursday.

Japan's Nikkei average rose 1.8%. That's despite new data showing that retail sales in the world's second-largest economy sank the most in nearly four years in December. Mainland China's markets are closed all week due to a national holiday.
