Owl blamed for knocking out power

CEDAR RAPIDS (AP) -- An unlikely culprit is being blamed for knocking much of the Cedar Rapids area's broadcast television off the air on Tuesday.

An Alliant Energy spokesman says an owl was responsible on Tuesday for knocking out the electrical service to about 1,200 Alliant Energy customers -- including three local TV stations.

Alliant spokesman Ryan Stensland says the owl apparently landed on a power pole in northern Linn County and was lit up.

Stensland says the owl landed on the apparatus connecting the power line to a pole between Coggon and Walker.

The outage affected about 1,200 customers in the Walker-Coggon area, including the broadcast towers for KCRG-TV9 and KGAN-CBS2, which share a tower near Walker, and KWWL, which broadcasts from a tower near Rowley.
