Stimulus package and your health

Waterloo (KWWL) - The new stimulus bill could drastically change the amount of funding for low income or underinsured Americans.

Under the proposed economic recovery plan, $87 billion would go towards Medicaid, $20 billion would fund health care information technology to manage medical records, and $30 billion would extend COBRA by helping workers pay for coverage with subsidies.

Millions of uninsured children would gain coverage through the proposed State Children Health Insurance Program or SCHIP. Republican opponents say it would force children into government-sponsored insurance. The expansion would be paid for by increasing the federal tax on tobacco products. Congress still needs to work out differences before SCHIP would go to President Obama.
